Tyler is making his debut on Side Checks Podcast discussing all things entrepreneurship inside marriage and what this truly looks like. For 3 years now, Tyler has seen entrepreneurship through my experience. There have been many ups and downs. However, it has blessed our marriage and taught both of us about true support.

In this episode, Tyler is sharing his experience watching the sale of my food photography business from the sidelines. As well as his memories of seeing this business start from the ground up.

Supporting A Spouse Who Owns A Business

This is an important episode for us to record because we have seen the stress entrepreneurship can place inside marriage. It has both challenged up and brought us so much peace.

We feel strongly about spreading the message of being a supporting spouse in every regard. However, when there is a business owner inside a marriage, support cannot be overlooked.

Understanding how to support one another while supporting a business is a foundational lesson. A lesson we do not consider ourselves experts in at all. However, one we dedicate being a student to everyday.

Starting A Business Together

In this episode, Tyler and I share the memory of starting this business together. We spent each weekend together cooking and shooting recipes. And we had a lot of success. And a lot of flops.

There was a shift that led to me running to the business solely and Tyler supporting the business instead. This wasn’t an argument or a power struggle. Looking back, I believe it was my understanding of the business model better. And since I was a photographer, I could work solo a lot.

Finding Your Roles Inside Business

Tyler prides himself on being a strong supporter. And he is. Inside my food photography business, Tyler loved assisting with dishes and being a genuine cheerleader. Occasionally Tyler would also assist with holding a fork for capturing the perfect bite shot.

As simple as it sounds, this support actually benefited me significantly. My food photography business left our kitchen a disaster every day. Therefore, having Tyler come home and immediately start helping made all of the difference.

One thing I love about Tyler’s experience of this is his glee for having a role. For us, it wasn’t always the role that brought us and our marriage happiness. Instead, it was the happiness we received knowing we were fulfilling our roles to the best of our abilities.

Support Versus Having Doubt

Entrepreneurship inside marriage isn’t always easy. Tyler shares how he had true doubts about the business at times. This conversation is much easier to have today. However in the midst of business, fearing this reality was challenging.

Tyler explains he always had confidence in my ability and my talents. However since my food photography business was so niche, he had doubts at the magnitude it could have.

Being able to reflect on this has been so important for us. He has been able to see entrepreneurship through a different scope. Something he doubted has actually turned into a sold business 5 years of income for us.

In this episode, Tyler also mentions the difference between having doubts in a business as an individual versus being a supportive husband. I’m happy to look back at our journey, always seeing the support in good times and in bad.

Tyler’s Role In The Sale of The Business

I loved being able to recall the sale of the business in this episode. Tyler mentions how the sale was a hard thing to watch at times with me being busier than ever. However, we have so many fond memories of the sale inside of our marriage.

Tyler’s main role during this time was to support me more than ever. He also had a major role is helping price the business, negotiate, and facilitate the logistics.

What The Future Holds

Tyler and I are excited about the next chapter of marriage and the next chapter of entrepreneurship. We hope that together we can invest in a business that generates income for us, continuing to provide freedom and flexibility.
