There are 3 main reasons why summer is the perfect time to start a side hustle and tips for how to do it without giving up your fun.
Starting A Summer Side Hustle
For my household, summer typically consists of boat rides, fun in the sun, and grilling on the back deck. However, summer is also a really great time for my business. Using the summer to start a side hustle or develop projects within your business can be a secret weapon! One that I’m sharing with you today.
Why Start A Business In The Summer
I hear from a lot of people that due to the summer schedule, they cannot fathom starting anything. However, there are a lot of benefits to starting your side hustle in the summer.
In this episode, I am going to tell you 3 big reasons why summer is a great time to start your side hustle.
And trust me – I’m not about skipping out on the summer fun. In fact, it’s my favorite time of year. Not just because of our awesome blow-up pool, but how powerful it is for my business.
So I’m going to include some tips on how to enjoy the summer while also hustling hard.
01. More Time To Develop Your Business
The first reason why summer is the perfect time to start a side hustle is because you have more time to develop the business. In the summer, life has a way of slowing down. Yes, there are plenty of things that fill up our calendars…
BUT the days look and feel different. You aren’t in a rigid routine. And because you aren’t in a routine, this makes it a perfect time to develop your side hustle.
During the development phase of business, you are not customer-facing. This means, no one is waiting for you to deliver a product or service. Instead, during the development phase of business, you are solo-dolo figuring out exactly how to build your empire, what you want to sell, and how to get started.
Another way of thinking about this – your summer days likely will look pretty different with everything on your calendar. Well so does the process of developing a side hustle.
Since starting a business isn’t routine-based; meaning you’re not doing the same thing every week to get your business off the ground- your summer schedule is actually a perfect time to dive into starting a side hustle!
Maybe you can even minimize interruptions as you develop your business through things like kid playdates, doggie playdates, vacation time (yours or someone else’s), working while your spouse is working out of the house, or anything like this.
Plus, most businesses slow down anyways during the summer. This is especially true for online businesses like blogs, online services, digital products, and courses.
So using this slow season to start your side hustle is actually quite brilliant.
This way you’re not missing out on as much income opportunity as you might if you were to start your side hustle in the fall season when things historically pick back up.
02. Take Advantage of The Longer Days
The second reason why summer is the perfect time to start your side hustle is because the days are longer and it’s easier to blend work with pleasure!
During the summer, there seems to always be something to do around the corner. Your city likely has a lot more events and things to offer the public. But if you’re like my husband and I, getting out in your own backyard for an afternoon activity can be just as fun.
This is actually one of the big reasons why people don’t want to start a side hustle in the summer. Because they don’t want to miss out on the fun.
But I think the longer days make for the perfect balance of being able to enjoy the summer while also building a business.
Like I said – when you’re starting, you’re less likely to have clients or buyers waiting on you for something. PLUS – you don’t need to spend 8 hours each day developing a business.
So take advantage of using smaller pockets of time instead to start a business without sacrificing summer fun.
This is a great opportunity for a summertime routine where you incorporate side hustle working windows throughout your week around your normal schedule and responsibilities plus fun summertime activities.
03. Launch Your Business Into Fall
The final reason why summer is the perfect time to start a side hustle is because it can catapult your business into the bustling fall season.
Fall is the time of “back to school, back to business, and where folks like to start a new routine. This makes fall typically a lot better for business owners and where we begin to see an uptick in sales, inquiries, and new leads.
If you spend the summertime developing your business and doing whatever you need to get it out there ready for buyers, you get to launch it full steam ahead into the fall season.
This way, your ready to go side hustle can capitalize on this business rush.
Another thing to consider is that Fall is naturally busier for everyone.
And even though the life of a side hustler stays pretty busy, sustaining a side hustle business and its’ standard work will be much easier during the fall season compared to creating a business (which contains a lot of mental work!).
Here are some simple tips I have for you if you’re creating a side hustle, or just working on your business, this summer.
1. Bring your computer by the pool w/ a nice mocktail!
This is a treat all on its own! And getting out of your typical side hustle office can feel like a field day and make you more productive! This tip is best for creative work!
2. Work in 1-2 hour working blocks.
No need to always sit down with your laptop and grind for 4 hours. 1 hour working block can prove to be very effective and can help you avoid feeling overworked.
3. Listen to classical or elevator music w/ no lyrics
I’ll link my favorite playlists in the episode blog posts. But having music in the background that matches my workflow really helps me stay at the computer the amount of time i said i was going to.
4. Be sure you’re outside on a regular basis!
It’s summertime – get outside! Either with your laptop for designated side hustle working hours. Or just in general. If you are working on your business this summer, it’s going to be even more important that you get some natural vitamin D!
5. Go for a creative brainstorming power walk!
Walks around your neighborhood can both add more oxygen to your brain, check that exercising box, and help you think creatively!
I use walks with my dog Bear to help me think of new podcast episode ideas and lead magnets!
6. Hydrate and eat well!
Something about being extra hydrated during the summer makes you feel like a million bucks. So if you’re working on your business this summer, drink water around the clock and give your body the nutrients it needs. I eat a ton of fruit during the summer (bc im convinced it tastes better in the summer) and this helps give me more natural energy so i can enjoy work and summer fun even more.
7. Make a detailed planned, know exactly what you need to do
The biggest reason we don’t make progress within our business is because we don’t have a plan. Be sure to make a plan for your side hustle this summer and understand what’s on your to-do list before you sit down at the computer!
